Although the police service in the UK is financialy strained, there are some forces that have and are recruiting. The main police force that allows members of the public to directly apply (without being a Special or PCSO first) is the Civil Nuclear Constabularly. This is a specialist force whom currently protect the nuclear industry at various locations around the UK.

Another force that would consider an application form is Surrey. However, they require you to complete and pass the Police Law and Community (PLC) course beforehand. Unfortuntately this is a self funded course and offer no guarantee of appointment. Those who successfully pass the PLC are still required to complete that National recruitment process including a competency application form and assessment centre etc.  The cost of a PLC is in the region of £1800.

Because of the financial restraints imposed on forces, the best route to currently take to work for the police is to become a Special Constable. Although a voluntary role, if your aim is to become a Police Officer in the future, this will give you a taste of policing. Plus, more and more forces are most likely to recruit their police officer from internal applications only – special contables, PCSOs, custody officers and other police staff roles.
