 Navigating Online Medical Degrees
It seems like simply holding a college degree is no longer enough to get you the salaries or jobs needed to be successful anymore, especially in the health sector.  Employers are not impressed with your B.A., they want to see Master’s degrees or PhDs on your resume. This is largely due to competition also, more and more individuals have Master's and PhDs. The worst part is that with the jobless numbers up and the economy down, these employers can easily afford to pass you over for someone with the advanced credentials they seek.  For working adults who can’t take the time to go back to school to earn one of these higher medical degrees, this trend is disturbing.  However, there are many worthwhile programs out there that offer online medical degrees that can work flexibly in any schedule.

There are several key things to pay attention to when navigating online medical degrees.  The first is an awareness of the types of degrees you can earn online and what you are planning to do with your degree.  While it is impossible to earn a degree as a medical doctor online (and if you see an organization offering that run away screaming!) it is possible to earn several different types of Master’s degrees and Doctorate degrees through online courses.  Common types of online degrees include Master of Public Health, Health Science Masters, and a Master or Doctorate of Health Education. These degrees can help prepare you for work as a hospital or administrator, public health official, or nursing home manager.  Once you decide what type of online medical degree you are interested in, it is time to select a program.

When choosing the program, the biggest thing to consider is the credentials of the online institution.  It is so easy to build a website that claims to offer online degree programs without the proper institutional accreditations, leaving students without a real degree and a lighter wallet.  Save your time and money by being sure to double check the legitimacy of the online program.  All reputable institutions offer a link to their credentials on their website.  If you are having trouble locating the list of accreditations, feel free to contact the school and ask. All legitimate institutions should have no problem sharing this information, and if the people you talk to act standoffish, annoyed, or insulted then you should consider that a major red flag.

Other considerations when learning about online medical degrees are the number of hours needed per week to complete the program, how many years the program lasts, what the cost of tuition is and what costs tuition covers.  It is common for online programs to offer both accelerated degree tracks that finish within several months and more flexible options that can span across several year.  Many online institutions also offer financial aid for those who qualify.

However, the most important thing to focus on when you start to explore online medical degrees is what you really want out of your higher education.  While online courses are very flexible and can be done from the comfort of your own home, they still require time and effort.  For individuals who have families or hectic schedules, an online course may still be too much of a time commitment and resource drain to be worth the eventual benefit.  Yet if you feel like you have the time, money, and patience to dedicate to an advanced degree program you have the power to transform your current working position from “just enough” to “better than I ever thought!”
