LEED Exam Prep: Choosing the Right Class
If you’re considering pursuing a career in the new field of green building and construction, LEED accreditation is a necessary first step. From becoming a Green Associate to earning LEED AP+ certification, a LEED exam prep course can help prepare you to pass the tests required to get the career of your dreams.

However, not all LEED exam prep classes are created equal. Finding a class that is taught by experienced, knowledgeable instructors and that has a sound curriculum is key to making certain you pass the test the first time you take the test, saving you time and money.

So, how can you make sure you choose the right LEED test prep course for your needs? Here are some tips to get you started:

The first thing you need to do is determine which test you need to take. If you don’t have any prior LEED certifications, you need to first become a LEED Green Associate. This is a mandatory first step that provides the foundation for other, more advanced LEED accreditations. As a LEED Green Associate, you demonstrate that you have a basic knowledge of green construction and design principles. The test has a 2 hour time limit, and it contains 100 multiple choice questions given to you on a computer. Scores range from 120 to 200, and a score of 170 is necessary to pass.

If you’re already a LEED Green Associate, your next step is to become a LEED Accredited Professional (AP)+ specialist. The exact test you take depends on the career you desire. LEED AP tests include LEED Homes, LEED Neighborhood Development, LEED Green Buildings Operations & Management, LEED Interior Design & Construction, and LEED Building Design & Construction.

Once you determine which accreditation you need, the next step is to find a company that offers a LEED exam prep course for this test. Some LEED test prep schools don’t offer courses for every level of accreditation.

The course provider you choose needs to have a wealth of experience training professionals to pass the test and further their careers. LEED certification is always evolving, and it’s important that the school you choose is on the cutting edge of green building certification and principles.

You should ask the prep class provider what their success rate is in getting students to pass the LEED exams. The best LEED exam prep companies will be able to provide you with their success rate, and you should make sure it’s at least 90%. After all, every individual is different, and no prep class can guarantee a 100% success rate.

Most LEED test prep courses come in different durations and at different costs. From 2-day intensive overview courses to 1-day cram sessions, choose the test prep class that suits your needs. If you already have done a large amount of studying, a simple 1-day course might be more than enough to give you the extra boost needed to pass the test and get accredited.

When choosing a LEED exam prep class, you’ll probably immediately notice the cost of it. The truth is these classes do cost a bit of money, but it’s important to view this as an investment, not a cost. See, without taking an exam prep class, you could fail the exam, meaning you’d have to pay to retake it, costing you more time, money, and stress. If you are serious about a career in green building, take a LEED exam prep class today!
